This Post by Subomi Plumptre Should Redefine Christmas Celebration

We came across this post on Facebook by Subomi Plumptre. And right there in the euphoria of the festivity, it struck us – Christmas is indeed on of the loneliest time of the year. It is the time of the year when most people travel home to be with their loved ones – those that have loved ones.

Look around you and see who you can share this Christmas with, after all Christmas is more about Sharing. Read and be fired-up:

Christmas, the loneliest time of the year

Some people will be alone this Christmas. I speak from experience – I once spent Christmas at home alone with 22 Naira to my name. It isn’t everyone who has a home town to go to or even family to speak of. Some are recently bereaved; others have relocated. Some have no close friends or people assume they already have plans and so leave them out. Whatever it is, by some coincidence of circumstance, they will be alone.

I have often admired what Humans of New York (HONY) does every year and wish some churches would follow their example. People who would otherwise be alone during the holidays are asked to send a message to HONY. Those who have extra space around their table or at their event, do likewise. HONY then matches people. This would be so easy to organise.

At a personal level, you may be planning to do something for the holidays. Why not extend an invitation to someone on your timeline? Are you planning to go watch Heartbeat, The Musical or Bez’s concert? Why not buy 2 tickets and extend one to someone on your timeline who wants to go too? Planning a beach outing? Pick someone along the way. This Christmas, let’s make someone a little less alone.
